Arab Architects Critics Association (AACA) – History & Vision
On the 17th of September 2010, two architects, friends, academics, writers and critics on contemporary Arab architecture with prolific writings that span over two decades met in London; Dr Mashary Al- Naim and Dr Waleed Al Sayed. Dr Al-Naim, a professor at King Faisal University at Dammam – Saudi Arabia, in a rigorous article published in 2001, called for the need and the importance to establish a regional/trans-regional Arab platform that works as key legislative, cultural, and architectural missing umbrella to address the challenges and the pivotal role to unite and reorganize the current discourse in the Arab Architectural arena thought to undergo a state of confusion.

The idea was widely accepted among scholars and professionals and was discussed thoroughly on many platforms (one of which is Arab Architects website click here ) on which Professor Al-Naim argued his ideas and explains thoroughly and logically the various aspects of his idea and the validity of such an approach.

The idea re-surfaced during a conversation and was discussed in London, especially that Dr Al Sayed believes in the necessity to work as a Group. Hence, both architects and friends agree to take a step further towards this lifetime goal, by the establishment of an Arab association that includes key and most influential thinkers, writers, critics and active architects in academia and practice from all Arab countries. Such a list is not meant by any means to be limited or to close the door for others. On the contrary, it is meant to encourage the participation of those who share our vision, methods and aims.

The Arab Architects Critics Association is an NGO, established and registered in England, a section of Lonaard Group, within the aim to put together efforts, critical writings, and theoretical analysis in one direction. AACA aims to address, review, and establish a rigorous methodology to tackle and re-read current architectural thought with a keen sense of purpose and meaning. Its purpose is to provide the professional expertise of the elite writers of our time in the field of architectural theory and discourse, not as an end-product, but only as the beginning to be handed to the next generation of Arab architects, scholars and students.
